my Nikon D80 is "in transit" with UPS as we speak, and i need some information on SD cards:
1) What is the best brand/size (i take a TON of pictures esp. at 10 MP) for the cost?? (one brand costs $40, another $70, but both are 2 GB, whats with that??)
2) I used to use my iPod to transfer photos from my memory stick in my point and shoot digital camera (sony cybershot dsc-t1) to the iPod under Photo Import, then delete all the pictures on the memory stick and then when i got back home, plug in my iPod (set under hard disk mode), and transfer the pics to the computer. that way, i could have an entire memory stick space. NOW, my iPod "doesn't work"--runs out of power while importing the photos, freezes because i've dropped it so many times, etc. I CANT RELIE ON IT. hahah
SO, what should i use as a "hard drive" so i can have maybe two 2 GB memory SD cards, then mabye transfer one of them to a thing and have the whole memory card, what's the MicroMate for SDHC SDDR-11 i hope you understand what i'm saying. i was on the sandisk website, and they have these "readers" and these MicroMate for SDHC, what is this??? its only $20, but is it what i need. or do i need this $80 Extreme Reader thing. im so confused.
I NEED something to replace my iPod as the device to transfer photos to so i can clear the memory card to have more space w/o buying MORE memory cards, or is that more economical???
please help, thx Your camera's owner's manual will have a list of approved memory cards. Use one of those brands or your warranty may be void.
Also, *never* put all your pix on one drive, no matter how reliable.
Memory is cheap. Buy cards as you need them.
Lastly, save card space by reducing the quality/image size to only what's necessary. And don't bother with NEF. Sandisk is a very reliable brand, which I always recommend. The Extreme III SD card would be a good choice for the D80.
For a long vacation, what you probably need is a portable HDD storage device to store your photos (especially if you will be shooting 10GB +). They are available in various capacities of between 20-60 GB or more. I used one for my last overseas holiday and took about 12GB of photos.
These devices are portable...battery powered and very reliable. They usually accept a number of different memory cards and come with an AC adapter and you just need to recharge them.
There are quite a number of types available. I used a Digidock Photobank (2 models available) but there are many others to choose from. You will find that the more expensive devices have a fancy colour screen, which really is unnecessary and a waste of money if it's just for photo storage.
check out the links below... I agree with Pertra that SanDisk is a good brand. I use their Extreme lll cards with my own Nikon dSLR.
You can probably get away with their cheaper Ultra ll cards. These have the same quality but a slower write speed than Sandisk Extreme lll and lV versions.
The speed difference only matters if you're shooting sports. The D80 can shoot 3 fps for a minimum of 6 pictures with any card - it temporarily stores the first several shots in the buffer. If you think you'll reguarly shoot more than 6 frames in continuous mode, getting a faster card will improve performance for shot 7 and further. Here are some benchmark numbers for the D80 with various cards:

As for external storage, the cheapest option is to pop by a camera shop when your card is filling up. They can copy the contents to CDs/ a DVD while you wait and they charge just a few bucks for this service (including the CD). If it's just for vacation, why invest in a new storage device? |
