What is a good professional quality brand of photo printer for digital photos?

I'm switching over from a traditional dark room to a fully digital setup. I have been looking around, but all I can find are the "consumer" quality printers for point and shoot cameras. I have recently ugraded to a Nikon D200, and I would like a professional quality printer to add. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I myself had to switch over to a digital darkroom because to be honest I just don't have the space for a traditional darkroom. In terms of the best printers to get, I would suggest any epson printer which uses the new k3 inks. These inks work especially well for black and white printing, and they are archival for at least 200 years. Another thing is that you have limited bronzing of the image. Bronzing if you are not familiar with is when you look at the image from an angle it looks more or less silvery or bronze. I personally use the Epson R2400

both hp and kodak have photo printers that are specificly designed for photo

For me i would choose HP....if you are using Nikon or other funny camera brands other than Canon....DONT BOITHER BUYING Canon...coz...well...they will some how make the picture looks....ugly...

(^^,)

Honestly, consumer level ink jets have gotten to a point where a professional level is out-moded. I've personally loved Epson for their photo quality. Epsons print very sharp and great color reproduction as well. HP does an amazing job too.

If anything, just go to any store selling HI-LINE Epson and HP and actually compare print outs. Bear in mind, each company, as well as model, offer different strengths as well as weaknesses. One advantage I give Epson is the archival inks. The drawback of which is more maintenance and cost. But the results are worth it. As a counter point, HP tends to be faster and quieter. Bottom line is you should see the results of the printouts and choose which suits you.

I personally have a color laser but I wouldn't use that for digital darkroom because the printouts tend to be over saturated and dark. But dog-gone-it it's sharp!
