When will the price for the Nikon D40 go down?

i reallly want this camera, but i don't want to pay $600 for it! when do you guys think the price will go down, if it even will? the price for digital cameras has decreased drastically within the past few years.

If my experience is any guide, it will go down one week after you buy one.

Just do it.

it will come down in price just before its replacement is released,

it might be called D45 or D41 or something like that

Don't wait for the price to go down, because you'll miss all those great photo opportunities while you're waiting!

But, it has already dropped some, as supply has finally met demand. (typical in the digital camera world)

How about $523.95, no tax and free shipping?

Why do you want a Nikon D40 which does not address the problem of image stabilization/vibration reduction. Consider an award winning image stabilization built into the camera body - the Pentax KD DSLR series beginning with the Pentax K100D starter kit with two Pentax lenses: an 18-55 mm. normal lens and a 50-200 mm. telephoto selling for $600 at samys.com. Again, the Nikon D40 is not really an affordable total DSLR system and the special VR lenses are downright expensive. So, if you should purchase a Nikon D series telephoto, you will have to bring along a tripod to support. The Pentax lens system overall, is a more affordable and self-sufficient DSLR to cover all image stabilization issues. Unfortunately, Nikon has chosen to place vibration control within their lens which is not the proper way to design a DSLR initially.

And if you want to really save on a Nikon D40, why not consider "renting" one for those special photo opts like the other professionals do who really do not "own" Nikons or Canons, but merely rent since they don't want to be stuck with old technology. As you have correctly stated that "the price for digital cameras has decreased drastically within the past few years" so it would be unwise to even consider "owning" any digital camera due to changing prices for new technology.

Begin your photography experience with an affordable well-designed DSLR which can handle all future camera needs and that would be the Pentax KD series with image stabilization built into the camera body.

Good luck!

If you don't have a lot of Nikon's lenses look at the Canon XT. It's cheaper but more interesting.

I'll second the notion for going pentax K100D.

nikon D40/D40x limites the lenses you can AF with (only Af-S from nikon) No Tamron/tokina/sigma/vivitar/promaster/et... lens will AF with the D40/D40x series.

with the pentax you get shake reduction, metal mount lenses, and a wide assortment of lenses available from other manufacturers.
