Using older nikon lens on d70s?

I have a nikon n6006 with a nice 80-200D lens.

I know it will fit on the D70s. But what are the differences I'll notice when using those old lenses on a digital camera.

The biggest differences between the older lenses and the newer are that the G lenses do not have the aperture ring, they "provide distance info for flash and ambient light exposure processes," plus they actually focus the image slightly differently in order to match the size of the APS-size sensor Nikon uses. With the older lenses not designed specifically for digital cameras, supposedly there is a "slight" amount of fall-off due to the way they focus light onto the sensor as opposed to the film plane. I have not noticed anything w/ my lens.

I have the 80-200 f2.8 ed if-s and used to use it on my D100 and now use it on my D200 w/ fantastic results! You should be able to utilize all the functionality of your lens w/ your D70s.

Lastly, remember that there is a 1.5X magnification w/ your digital body. So, an 80-200 will seem more like a 120-300. Oops....almost forgot that many/most of the newer Nikon lenses include vibration reduction.

It will work fine. The newer lenses focus faster and some have Vibration Reduction (VR). Some also are designed for digital only ... they cover the smaller digital sensor and don't need to cover the whole 24x36mm film plane.

I use a 35 year old Nikkor 500mm mirror lens on my D200 all the time in the manual mode and get great shots with it.

Ken Rockwell seems to know a lot about this subject.

The designation of the 80-200D says that it is a D type CPU lens, as long as the lens has a G or D type CPU [designated as a D or G after the maximum aperture in its spec], it will work fully on the D70, or any other newer DSLR. These are simply known as "CPU" leses and are needed for distance assisted autofocus and matrix metering. Non CPU lenses will still work, they will just be manual focus and will not meter properly. Any AF mount lens will work on any nikon camera.
