How do I upload pictures onto my computer from a digital camera?

This is the second time I'm trying to upload pictures from my Nikon Coolpix 4800 to my Windows XP. It worked fine the first time but now it's not. When I plug it into the computer something comes up and says "Removable Disk (F:) Windows can perform the same action each time you insent a disk or connect a device with this kind of file: Pictures. What do you want Windows to do?" But it gives me no options so I can't do anything!

Once the camera is plugged into the computer, go to My Computer in the Start menu and double click on Removable Disk (F:). That's the memory card drive. Your pictures should be there or in a folder in that drive. Simply select all the pictures and drag-and-drop them into your desired folder such as My Pictures under the My Documents folder.

Remember, never format the memory card using the computer. Once the transfer is done, you can erase the pictures from the memory card using the camera's format option.

There are several causes and possible fixes here, I will enumerate them from simplest to most complicated

1. Since it worked the first time, check your camera settings if you inadvertently changed the camera mode when hooked up to a pc.

2. This happened to me several times already, check your USB cable. clean the ends and make sure they are shiny. I encountered several USB cable ends where the connector had a thin film over it which was enough to make for a flaky connection.

3. A software issue could be causing it too, download the latest drivers / software from the Nikon site and UNINSTALL COMPLETELY , the old drivers and software then install the new one.

4. After trying all of the above and it still does the same thing, I suggest getting on the phone with either Microsoft or Nikon as this might be a know incompatibility.

In the meantime, you might want to consider buying a card reader to be able to download your files and to serve as a backup for those times when you cannot download directly from the camera.
