Recommandation for a handy affordable digital camera with good features?

I currently own a Nikon 4800 and I love it to bits... The 8.3x optical zoom does wonder when I'm out snapping pictures. The only problem is it too big for a handbag!!

I'm interested in the Nikon L5... The biggest draw to me is its 5x optical zoom and 7.2 megapixels resolution. Price is reasonable too :) I like Sony's T100 in red but it cost almost twice as much as L5... Paying for the brand name??

I have not explored cameras by Fuji, Olympus and etc... There are just too many! What are your recommandation for a handy digital camera with good feature and at afforable price??

Stay away from the Sony cameras. They are expensive, but the quality isn't what it used to be. On top of that, they use proprietary technology, that is, non-standard technology. Hence, they continue to push memory sticks while the rest of the world uses secure digital and compact flash.

As for a specific recommendation, a lot will depend upon your specific needs. If you need a good low light shooting camera and a 3x zoom is sufficient, then the Fujifilm F31fd or F40fd are remarkable low-light shooters.

If the zoom is more important, then your Nikon L5 is a good choice. You might also consider the Canon TX1, which is about the size of a deck of playing cards and has a 10x zoom.

For size and handling, the best and only way to judge a camera is to actually go into a store and handle it. Judging on features alone won't make up for bad ergonomics when you actually get the camera in hand.

I suggest you make a list of minimum specs you will accept (megapixels, zoom range, price, etc.) then go into the store and see which cameras actually are the right size and feel right in your hand, within those specs.

Try looking at Pentax. I have the M30. It has 7.1 megapixels and 3x optical zoom and it was less than $150.

I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

The Nikon L5 didn't get many good reviews on amazon. You should check out the similar olympus 740 or 750 instead. It has 5X optical zoom, 7.1 mp, and image stabilization. And it costs in the price range of the L5.
