Question on digital camera and altering images?

I have a NIKON Coolpix camera. I will load the pictures into my computer with a memory card reader, and then sometimes I will alter a few of the pictures (crop, eliminate red eye, etc) The problem comes when I put my memory card back into my camera. The UNALTERED pictures will all be there, just as before. But the pictures that I changed in any way will NOT be there. Instead I will see a blank screen that says "FILE NOT FOUND." What am I doing wrong? Do I need to save these altered pictures in a specific way in the computer, and how exactly would I do that? Obviously I am doing something very wrong! Help! (thank you)

When a camera writes a file to a card it does so in a specific format which it can also (generally) read. If any modification to that file occurs the camera could crash when trying to read the file. You could run into a situation where the format is not correct or you fall afoul of any checks the camera does.

However, it is more likely that you are loading the pictures to the memory of your editing software and not saving them or re-writing them to the camera card.

You should change the settings in your software or your practices so that you save the files on your computer and do not work on the files when they are on the flash card. Copy the pictures from the card to your machine and edit them on your machine. You can use different gallery or editing software if you wish. Try something like picasa http://picasa.google.com/ or, if you are on a Mac use iPhoto.

Camera's are not personal media players. Uploading or copying files to the camera is not necessarily a good idea as it can cause your camera to crash or fail to display. You also want the files in a safe place (computer and backup).

You should be able to show original pictures and any edits you did with your camera on your camera, but once you connect the card or camera to your computer expect to copy the images from the card and only be able to see the edits on a computer or display device other than the camera. Working on a flash card is an easy way to mess up the file structure and lose all your stuff so I would recommend importing/copying ALL the pictures to your computer each time you insert the memory card.

I think u have changed the format of the pictures. Find out what is the extension for the pics created by your camera. When u alter it, make sure you save it as the same format. Dont let the software decided which format your pic has to be saved as. Choose the option "save picture as" and click on which ever format is supported by your camera.

Secondly, try and make sure u put those altered pictures back into the same folder u took them from. There are specific folders in your memory card where pics can be read and displayed.

Hope this helps...

Back to basics:

* Copy all the images from your camera to your computer.

* When you make changes in your images, save them as a different file name so you still have your original files.

* Remember when you are making changes to your files, the only files effected are the ones on your computer.

If you try to modify the ones on your card, they may not show up on your camera, since the card is designed to store the images your camera takes ... nothing else. Thus ... "Instead I will see a blank screen that says "FILE NOT FOUND.""

Remember to format your memory card after you have transfered your images to your hard drive. This refreshes the card and writes a new image index file.

You're not really doing anything wrong. When you edit the picture you are changing it from the original format the camera produce to a format the camera can't read, that's why the camera can't find the file.

I would suggest that you simply not store the altered images on the same card that you're using in your camera. One, you're taking up storage space that you may need for actually taking pictures. Two, if the card gets damaged or you lose, you've lost the pictures, both the originals and the edits.

Transfer the images from the card to your computer and keep them there and reuse the card. You could also burn the pictures to a CD-R as a more permanent storage option. Remember, while they do have a long life, flash media cards to have a limited life. The card will eventually fail. Any images you havn't backed up somewhere will be lost when that happens.

Hello,

You have to save your altered pictures to the memory card. They won't go back on there automatically. If you can't save them directly to the memory card, save them to the desktop and then drag them into your memory card icon. This will put the altered pics back on the card.
