I've loved my Nikon F2a for decades. What digital camera will I be happy with?

I've had the F2a (and a few lesser Nikons through the years). Most recently, I've been using an N75 with a 28-105 D lens. But it's time to go digital. I need something that gives me the type of manual control over my images that the F2 offered, doesn't have an annoying delay between the time I press the shutter and the time the picture is taken, can take at least 1 picture a second, and offers high-quality resolution. Guidance appreciated.

The D200 is an awfully expensive camera that will be outdated soon after Christmas or so... like the D100, remember?

Save money and get either the D70S or the newly released D80; both of these cameras have newer technology and are great to work with, so I'm told by my friends who use digital Nikon cameras. The reviews raved both of these cameras.

I don't think you'll be disappointed, particularly when these are so much cheaper...

If you're going to learn digital technology, go to www.keh.com and check out for the D70S; people are dropping these now for the new Nikon D80.

I hope this helps (I love my two N80 and my two F5 film cameras).

Nikon D200 is awesome; 5 frames a second, no shutter lag, all the essential controls (exp compensation, ISO, white balance, flash mode etc)have easy access buttons so no faffing with menus, stunning quality, etc.etc. etc.

I use a digital camera as part of my design work...a nikon D50 would be good and you can use the lenses aswell..although you cannot use through the lens metering...they cost around 拢400 at the moment!!

You can't go wrong with a D-70! You can still use your older lenses, but there will be some changes with the field of view in them. They will be slightly more telephoto. Shutter lag happens in the pocket digitals, but I haven't noticed it in my D70. You can use different modes to set it how you like shooting, from program to all manual. I started with program mode, until I was comfortable with using the different settings. Go through your camera manual and try out everything! Talk to someone at the local camera store for information on Nikon seminars for further help. Good luck! Digital is so much fun, I rarely use film any more.

I had shutter lag problems with my first digital camera, which was a Nikon Coolpix. I haven't noticed any shutter lag in my D70 at all, so I don't know what the one poster is talking about! Has he even tried the D70? I doubt it!

Unless you insist on Nikon, Olympus has got some rather good digitals out now. the evolt e500 and e300 are good cameras. I prefer the e500, Do not completely get rid of your film cameras as there will be times you will want to still use them.

The lens for digital will be different than those for your film camera.. the 15-45mm lens is equivalent to your 50 or 55 mm lens on your film camera, and is the "normal" lens. Telephoto lens are smaller and lighter. For most things having a 15-45 and a 45-150 (like 200m lens) is sufficient.

Consider the type of memory cards in any digital you get.. the xp cards are very small and convenient, but also just as expensive if not more so than the compact flash cards. The evolt series holds both xp and cf cards at the same time which can increase your capacity by quite a bit. When you get memory I would not get less than a 1 gig card (I have 4 of those but find myself jonesing for some 8 gig cards as I shoot much in raw format.)

I concur with the D200 suggestion. The camera is designed for a serious photographer who needs speed and control. The D70 is a nice camera but it does suffer somewhat with the shutter lag that you want to avoid. Since it is a Nikon you will be familiar with the controls and their layout. If you have limit exposure to digital it will take a bit of getting used to. There are numerous sub-menus on the camera that is a bit of an overload. It is fast and will take the D lens you already have. I would suggest buying a dedicated flash with the camera. The Nikon flash system does a great job and trying to use an older flash will just be frustrating for you. I had an old F2 but since going digital I have found the new medium a pleasure to work with (don't get me wrong....it's not all a bed of roses). If you approach the camera and digital in general with a systematic approach you can figure most of the problems out on your own. Good Luck.

Yo Probably will love the one I do: Nikon D200, you can do the same thing as with F2. and more.

My first digital was a fuji finepix 5500. EXCELLENT camera!!! relitively cheap. 4megapixels. Easy easy easy!! once i was familiar with the aspects of digital.....i bought the fuju s3pro. I am a professional photog and love the fuji line. Very high quality and easy to use. :)
