nikon d40 is what im looking for in a camera, nice high quality photos, light weight, etc
however it is too expensive for me right now.
do you know of another camera that is cheaper but can take the same quality pictures? In order to really get teh same quality pictures, you need to stay with an SLR. It's only a little cheaper, but the cheapest DSLR that is worth owning is probably the Pentax K100D, and this is coming from a Nikon fan. This is a decent camera.

I used to recommend the Pentax K110D as the best entry level dSLR, but I do not see it for sale at B&H Photo or Adorama. The entry level seems to now be the K100D. The only difference between these two cameras is that the K100D includes "shake reduction," which adds some expense to the camera.
Adorama has the K100D with the 18-55 lens for $489.95, after a $50 rebate. The rebate ends on July 31, 2007. You will still need a memory card and I would suggest at least the 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II SD card, which costs about $30. You can get the 2 GB for $35, so it would be silly not to go for the 2 GB card.
As of this writing (5-9-07), B&H is NOT showing the $50 rebate on the K100D with the 18-55 lens, but they ARE showing it for the body alone. Since this is a Pentax manufacturer's rebate, I would speculate that this is an error on the web site. If you prefer buying from B&H, you can call them at 1-800-622-4987 to inquire about this matter. They are closed until after dark on Saturday's, but you can check the web site and see what you can learn.
If you don't want to go into that price bracket, you will have to either buy a refurbished D50 (Yes, they are available.) or a new point and shoot. I absolutely love my Canon SD900, which is my pocket camera, but it costs over $300, so you might not want to spend that much either.
Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_came... Go there and see what you find. I see the Canon Powershot A550 is listed. That costs about $160 and it gives good results as long as you don't want really pro results. The A560 is better ($175) and the A570 ($211) adds image stabilization, which is a real plus.

I have a kodak Easy share and with the software with it I can upload and share my pics and print them on-line the pics are great and cost about 125.00 for the camera and the memory chips come in differant sizes canon is coming out with the S5 in a few weeks
that would be perfect i have got the d50 and am very pleased with it but the olympus e400 is a good price at the moment and very lightweight If you have no lenses for any camera system, you can go with Cannon. If you have Nikkor lenses the D40 is a good choice. Or you can try to D70 or D50. Depending on what you want to shoot and how much control you want. I think you should wait until you can afford a Nikon d40. It is a great camera and it will be worth the wait. But if you have to have one now I recommend the Pentax K110d dslr. It is cheaper (probably the cheapest dslr) than the d40 and it is a good camera but then again it is only a few hundred dollars cheaper than the d40. If you can afford the Pentax now then you can afford the d40 later. To really go to the cheapest camera you have to get a point and shoot which I think you wouldn't want to do considering your first choice is a dslr. Just save your money now and get the d40 when your ready. I think you will be happier in the long run. I just checked over at www.henrys.com and the D40 is the cheapest DSLR with lens. |
