Help!! my nikon d40's mirror lock is stuck?

I am not sure what the problem is, but even when I set it to down, turn camera off, everytime I turn it on, its open!! In every setting. Why..I thought this was just for cleaning purposes, according to my Nikon D-40 book.
I don't want it up...to collect particles, dust etc

I didn't turn it on!! I was fumbling thru each setting. I noticed for some reason it was on??? I turned it off. Now I look and it is still on?? It and my firmware and dustoff will not shut down either... I have a --- where the yes or no goes..anyone no how to fix this. I was using a manual setting with a film Nikon lense for a week..thats all I have done.
should i take it to Ritz camera.?
i have a beach trip to go to/!!

Why did you select mirror lock up in the first place?? Cleaning a camera's sensor if you are not an authorized Nikon tech is not advised. The mirror, curtain, and sensor can be damaged very very eailsy even the slighted touch can ruin them. I would contact Nikon and have it repaired.
