How to record Nikon D70 Preset White Balance?

Ok here's the deal. I got my IR filter finally today. So I was reading some IR tutorials and I happened to read one very interesting tutorial but I got confused. It is saying in there that ""the key to Digital IR is WB bla bla. If you put the filter on your lens and take a picture, the photo will come out red and pink." Thats true I tried that. "The way to fix that is to set a "custom" white balance." So. I don't have a "Custom" white balance in D70 Menu, I have White Balance Preset. Next it says "The way one goes about this depends on your camera, but imagine it's the roughly same process. On Nikon DSLR, you move the White Balance dial to the "pre"setting and hold until "pre"flashes, then point the camera at the source you want to measure and release the shutter. No photo will be recorded, but if the camera successfully recorded the WB, the top display will flash "good" if it was unsuccessfull, it will flash "ng!" I didn't got it this part. I was trying everything but I didnt got it.

So can please someone explain me or tell me how should I do this. Thank You.

I'm not sure if you are saying that you tried to set a WB and got the "ng" message or if you just don't understand the directions.

"Custom" WB and "preset" WB are the same thing with your D70.

First, you need a good white target. If you don't have a standardized white target, use a high quality piece of matte white photo paper.

Press the WB button and turn the command dial until the display indicates "PRE" for preset WB.

Press the WB button again and HOLD IT IN for a couple of seconds. The "pre" will begin to flash.

Point the camera at your white target so that it occupies most or all of the viewfinder area.

Press the shutter release.

Look for "good" if ti worked and "ng" if it didn't. If it didn't work, be sure that you are not casting a shadow on the white target and try again. If it still didn't work, maybe there is just not enough light to get a good reading anyhow. Move the target closer to the primary light source. I can see how you might have trouble if you are trying to shoot IR in the dark, though...

If you don't do this quick enough, the "pre" will stop flashing and you'll have to start over again.

The horny one is correct. I answered you well.

(haha - how bush of me to praise myself!) Report It

im sure the toothy one answered you well

its very simple if you follow the books directions

1. put onto preset white balance

2. press fire pointing at a white or mid grey piece of paper in the light you will shoot in

its done

it will say the same in your camera manual
