I'm looking to buy a nikon d40 or d60 but have concerns,help?

I'm looking to buy a digital Nikon and have narrowed down between the d40 and d60. I have a Nikon N90 and i'd like to be able to use my lenses (35-70mm and 70-210mm) without having to manual focus all my shots, which is what would happen if i bought a d40?
I'm not very seasoned in my camera lingo so i wanted some straight answers.
i know my N90 is older but i don't know much about the lenses.
I'm leaning towards the d40 because of its price but i dont want to cut myself short and have to end up manual focusing all my shots.
the real question is- and i know it's stupid & i should probably be able to figure it out- but i don't know how old my lenses are and if they have a built in motor so i could use them with a d40 or if i should go for the d60 so i could utilize my lenses.

U need the D80. Da lenses U have 35-70 and 70-210 do not have AF-S motor. D40 and D60 will B manual focus. Sorry!

Get D80 and be happy. Or save money--get used D50. D50 will focus wid your lenses and still look good. Find D50 on eBay or look keh.com for used one. D50 like D40, only focuses with your old lenses too. Nikon Rulz!

I'm not 100% on this but I believe you would have the same issue with the D60 as you would with the D40. I know if you get the D80 you will not though.

Check out Nikon's website for more info though.

I have a 35-70 AF F2.8 and on a D40 it's about a 52-105mm

With the D40 you will have to manual focus and unless you have D lenes you wont get 3D matrix metereing.

The only Nikon that can support all functions with no 1.5 crop factor for DX and FX lenes is the D3. This is not a problem and for telephoto it's great. Wide angle not so much.
I will say this the 18-55 or 55-200 AF-S lenes are excellent in fact all the DSLR lenes from Nikkor are pretty much top notch.
