I have a 35mm film camera, a tripod and the desire to do take pictures for a living. How do I get started?

My camera is a Canon EOS 650 and I have a 35mm-80mm lens. I like to take scenic pictures mostly, but in the last few years I have gotten into portraits and I have shot three weddings. I really want to do this as a career, but I have severely limited funds to get a business started...not that I even know how to do that. I also am very interested in artistic photography and maybe even tasteful nudes. Is there anyone that can help me?

It sounds to me like you've already gotten your start. Where you go from here is up to you.

The best thing you can do is work on perfecting your craft as a photographer. You can take some classes, find a working pro who would be willing to mentor you, perhaps even enroll in a photography school.

Keep your camera with you where ever you go and take pictures. Get a portfolio together of your best work and put together a comprehensive index of your stock work.

You will probably find yourself working other jobs to make ends meet, but if you keep at it you will eventually establish yourself as a known photographer.
Find a photographer in your area that shoots the subjects you love to shoot (Editorial, Weddings, Advertising, Portrait, Sports or what ever) and become an assistant.

You have to learn your photographic skills somewhere and on a limited budget schools like Art Center, Brooks, Cal Arts and RIT are out of the picture. Just the equipment alone would knock you out of the running ... for get the tuition and costs of supplies each term.

A far as artistic photography and nudes are concerned, take a class at your local community college and learn how to compose, expose, develop and print there. The photo-art classes at most community colleges will inspire you no end.

do your self a favor go digital.....and look into elco color labs best prices excellent quality for prints and posters look at their internet special....don't let that any one stop you from your dreams....
first of all try to get film, that in this year of 2007 it's kind of difficult and pretty soon they will discontinue the make of it at all.
Good for you! You've already shot 3 weddings so you've got some experience under your belt. Get a decent digital. You will save some money on film and developing. *And don't listen to the guy that says they are discontinuing film. He's full of it since film sales are at an all time high despite the digital era* Try making some free business cards at Vista Print. If you know anyone with kids, offer to take some nice family portraits. Try to get some more wedding gigs and build up your equipment as you go along.
Lots of school. Lots of experience. Lots of money. In 1976 when I graduated from Photography college, I had15,000.00 worth of photo equipment and would need another 30 grand for more equipment before I had a customer lined up. Now, 30 years later.............Be prepared.
