What's the best lens for DSLR for nude photography? |
What's the best lens for DSLR for nude photography? not sure if i understand the question. but if you mean which focal length ( like wide angle or telephoto) so your nude models don't look goofy with large bullfrog eyes, and a chin like a giraffe, etc... due to perspective distortion... then i can help you with an answer for that. i would say a medium telephoto. a portrait lens would range between 80mm - 120mm by the standards of the old 35mm . for digital, i think you half that number or is it a 3rd. (ask your camera salesman). with any lens, the closer you are to the subject the more distortion you create. that is why people look like a goldfish if you photograph them closeup. a longer lense with allow you to photograph them closeup without the distortion, because you're at a distance. it is also good for "fattening up" your model. and also to soften the rest of the body or face if you use a large aperture (ie. a smaller f number e.g f 4, instead of f 16) of course, the opposite would apply. if you want to make someone look "skinnier" you would not use a long lense. instead, you'll use a wideangle lense... 35mm, 28mm (once again by the old 35mm standards). as for distortion once again, the same for posing a group... notice that the chubbier person at the end of the group will look chubbier. that is why when posing a group, i have the skinniest people at the sides and the chubby ones in the middle. to do the opposite will get me a lot of new enemies, lol.. because they will all come to me and scream at me telling me i make them look chubby. lol finally, if you're referring what lense is the sharpest. any lense can do that. every lenses has optimum sharpness at an aperture setting that is usually 2 or 3 stops from its largest aperture eg. 5.6 or f8 . this is because the centre of the lense is where there is least distortion. hope this helps. Are these going to be environmental shots or are they going to be more of studio shots? For environmental nudes you usually want a wide field of view but if your concern is to keep the subject as natural as possible you probably want to stick with a lens of anywhere from 35mm-50mm. On the other hand if you want to isolate your subject from the background try a lens with a focal length of anywhere from 80-200mm. Anyhow this is a question about aesthetics, and any suggestion that you receive is totally opinion. If you think that nude portraits with a fisheye lens is appealing then go for it, afterall it might be interesting. You should be more concerned about the lighting then the lens. The lens is base on What you want to do, How close are you going to be, angels, more like a portrait or full body. All this will determine you lens. All this is useless if you don't have the proper lighting. You can make a very attractive person look bad with the wrong lighting then try to get them to pose for you again. |
