I am driving from NJ to Los Angeles in April, I have a Kodak z7590 and a Panasonic PV-GS36 and plan on making a photo and video journal. Should I grade my digital camera or is this one a good option. Personally, if you have the money, I'd suggest a new camera. It would be GREAT if you could get a DSLR, such as a Nikon D40, and a longish telephoto lens, such as a Nikon 55-200 f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX. The D40 comes in a kit with an 18-55 lens and the 55-200 picks up where the kit lens leaves off. The D40 kit costs $600 and the additional lens costs $170.
If this is too much for you spend before going on a trip, I'd suggest sticking with your Kodak, which has pretty good range, but a smaller sensor.
My reason for this suggestions is because you will be able to cover broad landscapes with the wide angle end as your Kodak has only a moderate wide angle lens. The telephoto end is not quite as good as your Kodak, but the lens is probably better. In any event, I would rather see you use the much larger sensor in a DSLR for better quality images.
Personally, I hate video footage of travel, so I would not recommend even taking too much video, let alone spending more money on new equipment. Money well spent! Report It
