My Pentax camera coonects to my PC througha USB cable and just looks like a Removable Disk Drive, there is no software that has to be installed on my PC to pull the pictures from the camera.

Just about any digital camera made today, even the cheapos, have a USB interface.
Find a camera you like and check the features list for "USB connectivity". Some may require software installation and they will come with a CD loaded with the necessary drivers.
