Photo Essay suggestion?

My final test in Art Appreciation is Photo Essay and the topic is "Urban Culture". The topic is so broad that I can't think of anything! Please help...

Perhaps a series of still life images from around the city that show evidence of people, but no people?

For example, graffitti with spray cans still on the ground or a child's hopscotch board on the sidewalk or the aftermath of the opening of a fire hydrant.

your final is YOUR final not OURS dont make us do YOUR work FOR YOU.

Grab your camera, drive into the city and start walking around. You will soon see what is unique to the city, culturally, physically, socially and in other unique ways

Shoot two or three rolls, make contacts and sit with your instructor and edit them. Between the two of you, you should find something interesting to pursue. Then go back and shoot around that subject or object. From those two shoots, you should come up with five to seven amazing shots that represent your view of "Urban Culture"

Do you live in an urban environment? What is it like? What do you do? Who lives there? What do they do? Its best to photograph what you know, what you are familiar with, and most importantly what interests you. Perhaps what you think is really common and benign in your life may be quite exotic to someone such as myself who lives in Japan. I suggest you look at the work of Mary Ellen Mark and Gary Winogrand as a source of inspiration.

Look at the broadness of the topic as a benefit, not an obstacle. Like any essay, a photo essay needs a theme or thesis statement. So first, form one such as "Urban culture is vibrant and inspiring" or "Urban culture is de-humanizing" and so on. Once you determine a theme, research your theme, shoot pictures to support it, then sequence them as you would order your words when writing an essay.

If you need inspiration look at the works of the master of the photo essay W. Eugene Smith. It is not hard to derive his themes by just looking at the photos and the sequence in which orders his photos.
