What's the best way to shoot a concert?

I can't quite how to capture a concert with a camera. I have to use my on board flash and I can't quite get it right. I can't capture the motion, unless I turn down the shutter speed, witch will cause blur. With a tripod or mono pod this would not be a problem, but those are hard to set up at a show. I see concert photos where the motion is captured and the the color is blurred, but the colors are still bright. How do I get effects like this. A lot of the work I see is obviously done with a fisheye lenses (or they at least put the effect on the photo).

Here's some examples of what I'm talking about

When I shoot concerts, I always end up freezing the action and blowing everything out because my metering is way off (due to the dark).

Sorry should have clarified that I use digital SLRs. I set the ISO high, but this tends to blow the colors out and I still freeze the action.

I take it you have press creds and venue passes so you can use your DSLR.

I use a 24-85mm f/2.8 @ 1600 ... that said, I use it in the manual mode and take my light reading using an incident light meter reading at each performers stage spot during the lighting setup. They are usually within a 1/3rd stop from each other because most venues video tape the performances so are lit for that purpose. Usually the lighting is dramatic, so shadows enhance the shot (you are not shooting portraits, so a 3:1 lighting ratio is not necessary)

Just so you know depending on the concert a lot of places do not allow cameras and can be confiscated....

First you will be shooting under low light conditions and a stage that will have spot lights and colored gels. You should be able to shoot this between 400 ISO - 800 ISO. You will also have to somewhat meter your exposure and you want to try and get the best you can to "0" or what ever it is on your camera.

You never mentioned the type of lenses you have and how fast they are. But I would use them at the largest aperture you have (f~1.7, 2.8, 3.5 etc) this will allow more light and you can work with a faster shutter speed. (You might be able to use flash but as I stated if you sneak the camera in they may take it). You need to shoot in manual mode to get what you are looking for since you will have total control of the camera. If you can use the flash set your shutter at a lower speed like 1/15th (or slower) this will allow the camera to stay open a little longer to let in some of the ambient light (if you use your flash at a higher shutter speed you just get a plain picture of a guy standing on stage and no colored lights etc unless that is what you want). If you are allowed to use your camera with out it being confiscated and you have a mono-pod use it. If not you need to practice hand holding the camera at low shutter speeds with out shaking to much. Pull your arms in as close to the body as you can with your left hand under the lens and camera as support and push your elbow into your stomach this will serve as a "mono pod". Watch your breathing and press the shutter smoothly. You can also lean your camera on a railing or back of a chair if this will allow you to shoot and see the stage.

This also depends on your distance to the subject. You also don't want to just use full power on your flash. You want to be able to capture the ambient light (the colored lighting effects).

Hope this helps,
Kevin
