35mm camera questions?

I really want to get into photography and am looking into starting a photography course in college but i need to have my own 35mm camera. i dont really know alot about them at this point. where is a good place that i can find a good maybe second hand 35mm camera? i dont mind buying over the internet as long as the site is safe( i live in england)

Buying online is great if you know exactly what you want and you can sort out the junk from the jewels.

But in your case it would be better to shop at a real camera store, where you can see the merchandise, handle it, ask questions and above all, get a warranty.

Used cameras can be good buys, but Nikon makes a brand new manual-focus camera called the FM10. It should be stocked by your local dealer.

Ask the course instructor whether this would be a suitable camera.

Try EBay.

Depends where you live but most good camera shops have a good supply of 35mm cameras, many second hand. Probably better to see and handle before you buy rather than risk via t'internet.

Depending on the course they either require 35mm film or as in my Diploma course a DSLR was adequate, E-Bay is the main source for 2hand cameras using Pay Pal is a secure way to obtain something with confidence, Old school something like a Nikon FM--2 or FE-2 are great all rounders otherwise find yourself a good DSLR for your daily use and combine it with whatever requirements the college needs.
Ask them they will advise you on what they need and give you a range and type to select from.
Start by going there..
Good Luck

Here's your best bet. Look here for the Craigslist site that's closest to where you live. If you can't find what you want at the "photo & video" link, then you can post a free "wanted" ad at the site.

I've bought and sold several items from Craigslist and been very satisfied. First off all, you get to meet the person selling and try the item out before paying. Second, buying and selling ads there are free!

I hope this is helpful and best of luck!

The Pentax K1000 is considered to be the best student camera. Totally manual it only needs a battery for the light meter. Buy it with the Owner's Manual and a 50mm f1.4 or f1.7 lens and you're good to go.

You got good advice on buying the camera. The big question is: What KIND of 35MM camera? An SLR? A rangefinder type? A simple box camera that uses this film?

In my day, 35MM cameras came in very simple form (no light meter, speeds up to 1/500 of a second only, limited lens selection, limited flash potential, etc.), all the way up to a fancy Leicaflex or Nikon camera, with many accessories and automatic features (sort of "point and shoot", almost).

You should get a camera that can be used COMPLETELY MANUALLY, as well as automatically...focusing, shutter speeds, lens aperture, depth of field preview, etc. This is what the photography class may require of you: not using a fully automated point and shoot camera that requires no thinking on your part.

Cameras from the middle sixties to the late seventies can offer you this choice. Make sure the unit works well when you buy it, as repairs are difficult and expensive. Happy photographing!

For a camera, I would recommend you get a used camera that can autofocus, so that when you move to a digital SLR, you can use the film lens with the digital SLR for autofocusing.

Thus, I would recommend a used Nikon F80, which is a superb film SLR which autofocuses.
