I think my rationale for getting a job may be hurting my chances, what should I do? |
I have a B.A., worked on a presidential campaign, managed political projects, worked as a business development manager, etc. - and now I am applying for bartenders positions so that I can go back to school to do what I really want to do: photography. While going to school and interning I want a job that is both flexible and relatively high paying and bartending is just that. The problem is that employers ideally want people with no time conflicts - what should I tell them? Bartending jobs are very competitive in Los Angeles and I of course want to work at a place where the tips will be great. The interviewer always remark that this is an "interesting" career change for me which forces me to explain my rationale. I always emphasis that I NEED to make money and that my schedule will work around my job but still feel that it is hurting me. I realize that many artists in L.A. bartend and wait tables, so I my situation is not unique. Thanks in advance. It sounds like you are going in a good direction. One possible question you are not answering during the interview process is why you are leaving a business/politics-oriented world and going into art. Did you fail there? Will your references show that you are an incredible person to work with? Lead with your references, to show that although you are changing directions, you are reliable, fun to work with, and you'll do a great job. As general advice, I've been told that young people have all ambition and no focus, and that old people have all focus and no ambition. The trick is getting in the middle somewhere and staying there for a long while: with both ambition and focus. If photography is truly where you want to head for the next 40 years (as far as you know today), then your all-or-nothing approach seems to make sense. If it's just another thing to do, you may want to consider using your business development and political skills as your backup while you are going to school instead of bartending. At least that way you'd keep your options open while you explore your ambitions. Good luck don't explain your reasoning to them. tell them that you feel that you are up for the challenge and would like to experience this job no matter how interesting it may be They may also be looking for experience and you don;t really have any? |
