How to be a qualified photographer? |
My father thinks I should go on and further my education in engineering and he thinks my dream to be a photographer is a waste of time but I just loved photography so much. I wanna know how much does it cost for a course in photography and is it worth it? You could do short courses and generalyy build up skill levels. The key thing in our case, if you bear with me, would be to try and get as many clients as you can to take photos for e.g portraiture, architectural, animals, weddings etc and enter as many competitions as you can in your spare time whilst still studying for engineering. Learning professional Photoshop would be pretty much a requirement as well. If you are so passionate about photo and would prefer to study this then there are plenty of photography HNDS, degrees etc, Alelvels etc. and short part time courses. I, personally, would follow the engineering route (more chance of jobs) whilst sticking at and enjoying the photography as a hobby. But if photography was my true love I would probably head in the photography HND or Degree route. I dont know where you live but near to me at Huddersfield Uni I think that they do photography plus you can get a year work experience in the industry whilst being payed, making a 3 year degree course 4 years with the relevant practical experience, so you ahve the best of both worlds here. you could work in a studio, for a photography company, maybe in LENS/CAMERA ENGINEERING? Why not combine the two? shop assistant, etc etc? Itd be worth contacting various courses and seeing where you could end up if you have a love of engineering and photography and if there was a way of combining the two? Engineering of lens-based mediums? Whatever happens, keep your spirits up and always en joy photography and realise that it is a friend that is always there for you . Goodluck in your decision. I hope that my few word may be of some use. x start as a hobby go on a short coarse ( which does not cost a lot) take lots of pics , enter them into comps if your good go for it. ps its your life not dads. Photography is great,I Iove it. However to be honest, continue your education in engineering and do photography for a hobby. Photography is very expensive and competitive. Taking a course in photography is just the beginning. It requires time and practice. If your are serious about photography, consider in addition to the price for a course (eventhough you can find a good one free at a Camera Club) , you will need one or two SLRs, lenses, software etc. Plan on spending at least $10,000 for initial expenditures. Doctors and Lawyers throw around money left and right for this hobby and this doesn't scratch the surface of what your serious competition will spend. I belong to a Camera Club that shoots for non for profit competition. As amateurs we can keep the cost down somewhat and have a great time. One of our members went beyond our club and entered National Georgraphic Traveler Magazine Competition and won first prize and a free trip to China about ten years ago. He needed the trip to China like he needed a hole in the head. He is a retired millionaire you does nothing but travel around the world and shoot photos for fun. His darkroom would put Eastman Kodak to shame. For his winning photo he rented a boat in China and paid to have the Chinese people dress a certain way, than had them float out to sea in another boat against a mountainous sunrise, than with the best camera available at the time, shot 36 rolls of film of the same shot to make it perfect. The point is that this is what you deal with at the AMATEUR level. I am not trying to discourage you from photography at any means, I love it and keep it where I can afford it. I am just trying to emphasize to continue your career in engineering until you have tried photography and truly know what it is all about. You can handle both. Then you will be a rich engineer who truly enjoys photography. Photography course Basic was $200.00 over dollars,Intermediate course was $300.00 over dollars.Don't need to attend the courses, I teach you for free, lah,do you want it. Engineer for money, photograph for love. You will be happy and financially secure. |
