What type of 35mm camera should I use for my college photography class? |
Well, on the course description, they said we had to provide our own 35mm camera. Do you guys think it has to be one of the those more expensive SLR ones? Or can it be the normal film ones (ones that you can easily buy under 50)? Class hasn't started yet, but I'm afraid because if it's the SLR ones, I don't think I'm able to afford it. And plus, I'm only taking this class for fun so I don't necessarily want to spend too much money on it (besides the film and etc.). Would anyone want to clarify this for me? What you need is a manual camera, something like the Pentax K1000, OM1, OM2 from Olympus, any Nikon or Canon that fits the manuals category. You can use a 28 or 35mm wide angle, a 50mm standard lense, and anywhere from a 105-135mm for portraits. You can, if you want, cover these ranges with two zooms, a 28 or 35-70mm and a 70-210mm. The camera, and be sure that you get one that is working. You can get that from www.keh.com that has a warranty to it. Don't buy the bargain, but really, KEH underrates their cameas, so one in Excellent condition might, indeed, be virtually brand new. I have three Canons, 2 A1, and on AE1 (not AE1 Program), and a Pentax ME Super which though about 15 or more years old, looks brand new. I have a bunch of lenses for the canons, and a 50mm, 28-70mm zoom and a 70-210 zoom - the two zooms are absolutely brand new. All have been thoroughly checked out and are warrantied. Probably anything where you can change the f-stop, shutter speed, and focus (not auto-focus) is fine. edit: I mean change them individually -- not like where you change the shutter speed and it adjusts aperture for you. A light meter might be good, too, but they make external ones if you can't get a camera with one. look for a used one.Most photographers went digital and used film cameras are a bargin.I think Walmart sells a new Canon for around 200 and I think if you look around you could find a used one for half that.I'm sure they are common at flea markets and such. Canon still makes new film SLRs, the EOS Rebel line and they are not very expensive. However, go out to Ebay and try and find yourself a good deal on a used Nikon N90s with a kit lens(usually 28-50mm), or if you can find one with a 50mm f1.8 prime, that would be awesome! I was able to find a used N90s, with a 35-70mm f/3.3-4.8 and an SB-22 speedlight for $150. I think that, or a used N70 or N80 would serve you well. Do they tell you that digital is fine to use? if so, go with a digital over a film camera every time. You'll spend far more than the difference between the price of a second hand film SLR and a cheaper new digital SLR on film and processing during a course. The only real thing you should be sure of is that the camera you get allows manual operation, so that you actually learn to use the camera rather than picking a program mode. Pentax used to have the K1000 film camera that was regarded as THE student camera for it's rock solid reliability, accurate meeting and ease of use. I had 2 of them and used them for pro work, too. The current digital version is the K110D. I would recommend a Pentax K-1000. I started out with one for class and it is a great camera, prob. my favorite to date.
