Photographers....Help please!?

I urgently need some advice. I start a photography course tomorrow and still haven't bought a camera.

I'm down to choosing between the Nikon D50 and the Pentax *ist DL.

Basically, I think the Nikon takes better pictures which I suppose ultimately is the most important thing, but I just hate the body...it's too big and heavy. I much prefer the Pentax in that way, and I'm told it is a good (and cheaper) alternative.

Which should I buy?! Thanks!

bigger and heavier camera body may be "painfull" put it's much better in terms of stability and maneuverability.
i would go for the nikon D50 if those are your only choices. Otherwise I would look for a CANON dSLR - 20d, 30d or the cheaper 350d and 400d
Anyway ...don't hurry in buying a camera before you take the photography course - you will know much more about cameras after it. Just borrow one for the course.
its whats on the inside not on the out.
looks arent important.
lol
go for pentax try olympus they are good too
nikon i have had 1 for 12 years and its still going well
Buy the cheap one, I've done two courses and they usually have some great older ones to use. If there is a chance this could be a fad, buy the cheap one. I loved composing pictures but the developing side bored me to tears.
I would go for the Canon EOS 400D - the new 10.1 MP SLR that replaces the ever-popular 350D
I have recently bought a Nikon D70 after my Pentax ME super packed up ( non - digital). I was reluctant to give it up as I really felt at home with the Pentax and the Vivitar series 1 (70-210 with macro lens) and flash.

I asked the sales person in Jessops when I bought my Noikon the difference between the D50 and D70 but he said they were not trained these cameras only the 'snapshot compacts'

So I do not know the difference ( even after comparing the specifications on line) but I am really happy with it now I have got it. It is so easy to use and so versatile, the only thing I find dissapointing is the popup flash light does not cope very well in large low loght areas and I need to buy an add on flash or use my old pentax which may not be in sync. Although in more usual lower lighting conditions and for infil the pop up is perfect.

I understand this is common to all these camaras Pentax Cannon. Nikon. Not sure this is any help to you but I am sure you will be happy with whatever you buy they are both good makes.
