Where can I take a good [and not expensive] photography course in NY?

There are sites around NYC that offer classes and are somewhat good but for what they charge, your best bet is to call the community colleges (and senior colleges) and contact their Adult, Evening & Continuing Education Departments and ask about their Beginner's Photography classes. They are very, very well organized and what you learn there in a matter of a few sessions will have you taking photos and understanding the photographic terms in no time at all. What's more, they're fun and you get a lot of feedback from the instructors and other students. These classes are not given like in a regular classroom (like in high school) but more like workships.

A student I used to tutor met a young man who took a Beginner's Course with his younger brother and sister and they started taking wedding photos as a team soon afterward. I didn't think much of this idea (doing a professional's job) but after seeing a few examples of their work, I must say that these kids REALLY know their stuff. They took a Beginner's Course and the Advanced Course on weekends.

Good luck and best wishes.
The ICP - International Center of Photography - offers excellent courses. I think they are affordable? :-) Especially compared to the pricetag on my art degree. ha!

When you say [and not expensive] it's hard to know what price range you mean. Photography is one of the priciest hobbys to practice.

The JCC is supposed to be very nice and very affordable - at 250.00 for a full course!

I don't know about the quality of this program, but it's certainly affordable:

Your local city colleges are your best bet for inexpensive photography courses. Most of them are good, some are frankly *very* good, and they're darn near free.

NYIP (New York Institute of Photography) does correspondence-style courses, so you don't have to actually attend any classes, and it has a fairly good reputation (though they're a little late catching up on digital technology). The cost is higher than city college, but not that bad. See their web page at the link below.

Have you considered any online programs? Alot of them offer programs with payments as low as $30 a month. My husband is taking one for computer graphics. Although he looked into digital photography alterations course. There is alot to offer online and the convenience of your own pace. Email me if you would like more information on this ok? and good luck.
