Should I take University Photo classes or a Photography program? |
Right now I am in university working towards a B.A. I have taken one Photography course already, but the next 4 are very expensive and mostly conceptually based and none are digital, which i don't find very appealling... However I still love photography and would love to work in the photography field when i finish school... do you think i should go back to school and enroll into a speciallized photography course? or just experiement on my own?? Any suggestions?? Hello B, Here are some suggestions from a professor and a commercial photographer. First, the old saying "do what you love, " must be combined with common sense. My husband and I met over 30 years ago at a University. I received an "A" in photography; he did not. He went on to be the best photographer I have ever met. There are photojournalism programs, digital art programs, visual communications programs. All are good. Today, it is very, very hard to make it without a college degree. It really takes a college degree (or two) and experience. I suggest an internship w/a professional photographer. And you are not going to like what I say next: do it for free. Yep, FREE. Learn as much as you can in say, four weeks. Keep a job while you do it. See if this is what you want to do. Because photography is changing at lightning speed these days. Find a mentor . . . this can be a professor, a businessperson, a parent, someone who knows the ropes. Talk, take questions, ask a lot of counselors and others. You are absolutely right when you say it is expensive. And you are correct to experiment on your own. Everyone loves a self-starter. Go to museums, go to art shows, go anywhere you can see really good photography. Borrow books. Read, learn, live it. See life through a lens. Then you can make an informed decision. Good luck from a "shooter's" wife. Source(s): Lee is a professor and her husband is a commercial photographer. They live in the Midwest. take a photography course and experiment on your own, maybe have a friend as a subject my own answer I'd take the classes if you can. Where you're already in school, it will never be easier than now. The classes may not be digital, but you will learn important concepts necessary for great photography, whether it's film or digital. Good luck! i think u must opt for classes,no comparison. http://angle-mine.blogspot.com |
