What do i need to know about shooting band photos?

one of my close friends has just recently joined an amazing band, they're indie/hardcore genre.

i've done photography for a little over a year now, just amature stuff, i take a lot of pictures of my friends and family, just because.

well, my friend and his band just asked me too shoot them on location, i have all the equipment i need, but is there anythig i should know about shooting a band? i ususally take aphoto's of still life, and what not, where i can tell them what exact pose i want them in, i don't want to do this with the band, because i want the photo to express them as individuals, i'm not sure.

but anyt ips? hahah, thankk you!

get good lighting and composition: assymetical balance..not everyone all in 1 straightline..make it more interestng and creative

just take the coolest picks u can get!

get them in real life, that is correct. Be it silly, abstract, or unexpected.

Mess around with wind effects, lighting, and just have fun =)

Make sure there are no kids around. Maybe nail them to a log or a tree and fire away. Make sure there is nothing that the bullets won't ricochet off of. You must really hat the band photos...don't ya?

Well, I don't know much about photography, but just work with them. Ask them what kind of image they want to project. Just have fun with it and take some great pictures.

Wow thats a tough one. I love photography and i usually take alot of "in the moment" pics. Less posing unless your doing an album cover or something. But those are good too. Don't be afraid to angle the camera. Stage shots are hot, and show their energy. Bring LOTS of film. Take ALOT of pics. Like most professionals, you may trash some photos, but then you may see something great in a shot you thought would never come out. Also, if possible, bring 2 cameras with you...unless your using digital which I highly prefer. Bring back up batteries, or whatever your camera requires . (sniffle sniffle..I dont have a digital yet) Take both color and black and white. Sounds like fun! Im soooooooooo jealous!

My sister is A DP and A few Years back she was doing OZZ FEST. In the Days of PANTERA. she worked the Center stage camera. She told me the best way to shoot any band is get to know them and their likes& What looks good 2 you all ways looks KOOL. Due not focus on 1 person get them all.
1 by 1 and all together. and most of all shoot a lot of film.
you never know when U will get that shot that shows what the band is about.
MOST OF ALL HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's up to the band how they want to look.

--- Have a meeting beforehand to establish a direction, mood and feel

--- Take a few examples of band shots in case they're not clear on what they want

--- Ask questions like, would you feel more comfortable in a subway tunnel, an open field, a barn etc.

--- Establish wardrobe and makeup if any

--- Go scout locations, make a short list and show them to the band

--- Get approval and permissions and go shoot

Sounds like a lot of work, but that's the way pros do it.

Go band-photos hunting! now!

What i can add: Don't let them exaggerate the bad-guy/badass face.

Maybe this will give you some hints. (I couldnt find too much):

A camera?
Have good lighting and be creative, if the band looks cool like that, *click* away!
It all depends on what you tink.. have fun, go crazy!

Photo journalism! This is where your eye is stuck to the viewfinder and click on what you see.

First make sure you have a lens f2.8 or f1.4 this is good for low-light and for where you can't use flash.

Take close tight shots and turn your camera in angles, it dose not matter if you cut some of the head or shoulders off. Shots of hands on the instruments, guitar, base and whatever other instrument they might have. Move around, dot get stuck on a single place, get down and shoot upwards.

Remember lowest f stop and high ISO about 1600 EV 1 to 1.5 this is without flash

Good Luck

Photograph them in action! Be sure to use a tripod in low lighting situations and get as close to them as you can. Get them with their instruments. If possible, make sure their outfits match. Make it fun!
