Helping Another Photographer?

The middle of June, my car was totaled in a wreck. Still a little sore but healing fine.

Some insurance companies don't consider photography an art form, and are seem to run & hide when asked to insure cameras, et al.
My two Nikons were "lost" and upon approaching the insurance agent about them, they became "dumb" saying I was the only thing inside the car. Yesterday, the salvage yard called, and asked me to reclaim my personal property before they dismantled the car. Asking about the cameras, they said there's only personal property in the console. I know that, and cameras can't fit in there.

The whole point is the insurance company ripped me, and nobody seems to know anything about cameras, and the bag, in a wrecked car. So now, I've got to buy another car, and cameras. I've got a car spotted, but need help from others to help me replace my equipment. I'm 59, and this is the first time I've ever asked anyone for help, like this. I'm a member of IFPO, too-without cameras!!

Did you read the fine print in your policy and are you absolutely SURE the cameras are not covered? Were you on assignment and can prove the equipment would have been in the car?

Also, check your homeowner's insurance. I have heard of instances where lost personal property was covered by a home policy.

Let your local police have the serial numbers of your equipment in case the items show up.

Lastly, check the Better Business Bureau and see if the salvage yard has had any complaints about 'missing' items.
Sorry to hear about your accident and loss, I know the last thing on your mind when this happens is what's in the car so these kinds of things often go "missing". People often don't know what's covered and what isn't and the agent isn't very interested in discussing extra items such as cameras and stereo equipment etc unless you bring it up and insist on coverage. If your agent doesn't care or tries to put you off these kinds of coverages then maybe it's time to find one who does.
Because my photography equipment is a huge part of my business, I got insurance specifically to cover it. My cameras, digital media cards, lenses, camera bags, flashes, lighting, backgrounds, etc are all covered by my insurance. Again, I took out an insurance policy seperate from my regular insurance to cover my equipment.

Unfortunately, at this point in time, you may be up a certain creek in regards to replacing your old equipment. You may wanna check places like Ebay and B&H Photo for used equipment to replace your items.
