How do I become a porn photographer?

Ok firstly I'm serious. I've heard that there is a lot of money in the field of porn/eroticism. I have been a photographer for 7 years doing mainly portraiture and weddings and have recently been made redundant. I need a photography job thats going to give me a decent income. I already have all my own equipment as well (no pun intended). Please help

If you're serious about this, start to develop a portfolio of work. Do professional stuff- nothing cruddy, there's enough of that out there- hire real models, and try to go for stuff that's not typical, because there are so many of the same old pictures out there clogging the airwaves.

I highly suggest visiting Deviant Art (http://www.deviantart.com/) and browsing the photographs in the Artistic Nude, Fetish, and Pin-Up sections (under People and Portraits, under Photography, found in the scroll-down menu for Categories) and study the stuff there. Really talented people have wonderful photos that you can learn a lot from. Similarly, looking at books of erotic photography can help you to develop an eye for what works and what sells. What a fun research task!

Other than studying erotic photography and developing your own portfolio, start looking for places to sell your stuff. Your best bet is places that are looking for it. I did a simple "call for erotic photo submissions" search in Google and came up with some 700,000-odd hits, the first page of which all look very promising. Some are for books, some are for art galleries and exhibitions, but they are all good places to start to get some exposure to add to your "resume". You can proposition pornographic websites to buy your images for their use; just be careful where you put your stuff, and what rights you hand over for its usage. The more high-class you go, the better, generally.

Once you have some photos in some places, you'll probably get more requests and offers. Set up a website with some of your photography (that can't be "stolen") so that people can find out more about you, contact you with requests, and generally get your name out there. At this point, if your stuff is good enough, you might start sending queries and propositions to publishers for your own book of photography, to join the ranks the likes of Tom Bianchi, Petter Hegre, Eolake Stobblehouse, etc., etc..

Of course, this is all assuming you want to do erotic photography. If you just want to do porn photography, well, either get a job with a porn production crew (they need photographers), or start taking porn pictures and set up your own pay website. But know that there's so much free porn on the Internet that little start-ups rarely do well unless you've got an amazing hook, real talent, and a lot of drive and determination to make it work and spread your name.

In fact, your whole attitude of simply needing a decent income and there being a lot of money in eroticism is a little disturbing. Like anything, if you want the big bucks, you're going to have to work, and work like a dog, at least in the beginning. Otherwise, the money will probably be about the same, or less, than it was taking boring portraits and wedding photos.

Still, if you want to do it, it can be both lucrative and rewarding. Good luck.
