Lighting for photography - What are the difference between this three? |
I need to know what is the difference between power pack strobes, monolights, and continous lighting equipment. I also need to know what are the advantages? Disadvantages? And possible uses for each besides the obvious of "lighting?" I hope that makes sense. I just think that each lighting equipment is used to photograph particular things. Power pack strobes are a lighting kit that has the power pack separate from the strobe heads. The heads are lighter and a few heads can share the same power supply. They tend to be more expensive than the other lighting solutions. Monolights are strobes with the power packs in with the head. They tend to be rather heavy. They are also usually cheaper than power packs. Continuos lighting is exactly that. Photo lamps that are continuously on. They generally require filter tungsten filter compensation for film. They also get very hot! The whole room gets hot! They aren't real common anymore because of this. They are the cheapest POWER PACK STROBE: is the heavy power box used to plug the lights into, then the box plugs into the wall. There are lots of kinds usually a bigger one is better to accommodate more lights and amps/watts. MONO LIGHT is a smaller spot light for lighting and you can use several at one time for highlighting an object or someones hair, etc. CONTINUOUS is usually a set of larger lights on adjustible stands that are usually used with umbrella reflectors that you would set up and have on all the time for "ambient" lighting when shooting not necessarily with the flash. Power Packs are suppliers of high current for the flash heads; with one power pack you can connect several heads, sometimes six of them with different Watts/sec. each. The recycle time is about 1 second. Mono-lights are compact power and flashes contained in one unit, so is only one flash head and in some models has one additional plug for another head. The continuous light as it names imply, is a light that is not brief, it stay on till you switch it off; like the so called 'quartz' and the regular tungsten, (as a matter of fact the regular bulb in your house is an example of continuous light) they produce a lot of heat. By the way Strobe is a Flash, but a Flash is not an Strobe. I won't resummarize the info on how each type of lighting works since there are some good answers here already, but as far as advantages and disadvantages: Power pack - most expensive, easy to set up and use...very pro but you pay for it Monolights - good compromise, a bit bulkier and normally more consumer grade, but in the middle pricewise Continuous lighting - always on so perhaps easier to meter and use, but certain kinds can get hot and make your subjects hot and it is also difficult to match the output of a flash system. Can be cheap but not always. Some flourescent continuous lighting is not as hot, but these are expensive and can cause some problems with white balance unless you really know what you are doing. At the other end of the spectrum..some people buy halogens from home depot and use these...not very steady color wise and very hot. |
