I work a full time job and I have a side hobby of photography... my friends all tell me that I have some great talent and I shouldn't let it go to waste.
But I'm not going to just put my photography out there for people to steal. I would like to copy right them if I'm going to sell them.
Can anyone help? I don't even know where to get started. Does it cost money? How do I do it? First of all, you own the copyright to the images as soon as they are taken.
To place the notice on the image file there are two ways
First if you happen to own a Nikon DSLR, you can place it in the Image Comment found in the Menu.
If you have Photoshop, you and modify the EXIF file information. File > File info ..
A window will appear and you can put not only your copyright notice, but your contact information, subject information and key words.
Finally, you can put all the images you want to register with the copyright office on a CD and then send a copy of it with the paperwork and fee and there you have it. The volume of your work can be named by subject or dates or any other title so you can later retrieve that data should you have to provide it for the courts ... if someone does indeed steal your work.
When your images are posted on the Internet, you will be posting small images at 72 DPI, so their use would be very limited by any would be thief. |
