Photographers: What's Your Day Job? |
Is photography your main job, or just side work to bring in a bit more money? What is it that you do you do for a living? Right now, I'm going to college. I used to be a typist, and now I'm sort of looking to work at a local camera store. If any of you could see this place, it's like a toy store...Only instead of Legos and teddy bears, there's Nikon D3s and Canon 5Ds. Oh, and you can't miss the $50,000 12" high telescope. Pickpocket in a nudist colony. Sitting at my "&$()(*%^")" computer, editing (sorting) the images I shoot at night. IRL I'm Homer Simpson's make-up artist. Studio photographer. And shoots on the side. It's a hobby for me, more of a learning experience. I've done a few jobs for friends and family, nothing more. I'm talking to an amateur vocalist right now to perhaps do an album cover for her and her underground neo soul group. It'll be my first 'paid' job. For now, I work as an RF/microwave engineering electronics technician. I work for a company that manufactures RF devices of all kinds for military, government, and civil aerospace industries. Currently, I develop slot array fixed target and phased array antennas with multi axis tracking capability so that you can watch satellite TV on an airplane during your flight across the country. It's a pretty cool field, I got into it when I was in the US Navy and I've been doing it for almost 12 years now. It pays the bills. My passion lies in photography and I will learn what I can until I can make it a passion that pays the bills. I get jobs as I can on the side. yes, I am a studio photographer , I also do photo restoration Banker - during banker hours .. which give me plenty of weekend time to shoot, and evening time to edit. Driver mostly. I drive to the lab or a contractors, I pick up and drop off CD's. I arrange for shoots, locations et cetera. I drive to properties and record them. I burn CD's. I plan marketing. I organise receipts and stuff for the accountant. I drop off and pick up prints at places. I do marketing and planning, stuff like that. I goto meetings and network. Actual camera time is minimal and mostly around the change of light (I do architecture), alot of my work shots are ordinary and "real estate" standard, some I'm proud of. I do aspire to one day make great images, mostly its bill/taxes paying and running around. Ex full timer, weddings portraits, you name it, only trouble was I love photography, and the day to day business end of it was robbing me of that joy, so I quit and handed off my biz to my assistant at the time, whom I might add is a brilliant photographer in her own right and is doing very well. Yahoo Answers is my job. The pay is great here! I make twice as much as I did doing housework all day. ;-) No, phtography is a hobby for me but I did go to the trouble of getting a business liscence and do a handful of arts and crafts shows a year and a few other bits and pieces and have been pleasantly suprised by the results, so it's a hobby that more than pays for itself but not quite enough to live on - yet! I do structural design using various CAD systems to pay the bills....and spend most of my days wishing I was out and about with my camera away from the pair of 22" LCD monitors that is my view all day. professional daydreamer Full time portrait photographer, part time hobbyist. |
