What are the options after an MFA in Photography in the USA??

I was wondering what options there are, what people do in the USA after an MFA in studio arts/photography, etc, besides get a job. Can anyone point me towards some of the options I have in terms of residencies, fellowships, grants? How can I go about looking for some of these things - since I'm not in the American school system at the moment. Any advice appreciated. Many thanks!!

Hi! With a MFA, you are well qualified for a teaching position at a college or university, so that is always an option.

As far as grants, my research has resulted in the fact that government as well as Endowments for the Arts grants are hardly every awarded to individials. They particularly look for non-profit organizations to award grants with the assumption that they will then coordinate with the artists in terms of residencies, etc.

Here are links to the United States Government Grants in the Arts:

Here is the link to the National Endowment for the Arts also:

I have also found that if you do a Google search for art grants, residencies, etc., that there are a number of private organizations that offer grants, etc. One, for example, follows with various types of programs:

If you do a google search for "Photography Grants Residencies" a considerable amount of sources come up. It is also my understanding the residencies for traveling around to schools are quite in demand.

Also, if you google "Photography Teaching Jobs" there are listings for jobs around the world.

Hope this has helped you. Best wishes!
