I am a fourth grade teacher, and I am not liking my job at all right now. What should I do? |
This is my 5th year teaching. I started with 3rd, but I have been in 4th LA for four years. I like to work, and I have worked hard all my life. I like teaching; I have always wanted to be a teacher and like kids. I hate discipline problems and other teachers that act like they have it all together. State testing and administration stress me out. I love reading, writing, music, art, photography, and just being creative. I feel like I have worked very hard to get where I am; I have made many sacrifices along the way. I am married with two small children. I am approaching 30, and I am wondering if this is what I want to do the rest of my life. I have thought about teaching another grade, at a private school, at the college level, or teaching a different subject like gifted, music, or art. A few of the teachers I work w/ are close friends of mine. I feel that I am burned out. I'm praying for something else, but it hasn't came. I am going to quit after next year if things don't get better. I feel like teachers are the unsung heroes of our society. Often you do not get the support you need from parents, faculty and even society. We take you for granted. There is so much dysfunction in society today that it has to be overwhelming to deal with. I have lots of friends that tell me it's not what they are teaching it's all the BS in between. I hope you stay in the teaching profession because we need good teachers for our kids. I don't know how big your school is but maybe a smaller environment might be better for you. I hope you find the answers you are looking for and thank you for all you do as a teacher. you should teach ,middle school, and choose a subject you love Definitely take a look into a different grade or a different position. I've only tutored, but I've realized something - elementary kids was not for me; I worked much better tutoring high schoolers and college students. You may want to look into becoming an English/Art/Music teacher in a high school or junior high where you can focus your interests, as well as understand that most of your students who chose it are interested! Good luck - teachers have a tough job these days, I can only pass my respects for those of you bringing up our next generation! Quit and join the Peace Corps. They are constantly looking for qualified people to help in third world countries. I am very sure your satisfaction rating will grow. I know mine did. Personal experience We need more teachers like you! Please don't quit. I think what what you should do is maybe try going to a private school, or a Charter school. Maybe a gifted school, How about a school for handicapped children. Maybe you should look into a different position at the school, maybe a vice principal or something in administration. We need Teachers who actually care about the Students. It would be horrible for us to lose another great teacher. your extensive options sound heaven sent, i can only wish such oportunities were opt my way. 'Burned out= empty' fill your cup with ,perhaps rest n relaxation RnR , enjoy your children, plant 'hope seeds' , rejuvinate your teacher beginnings , remember why u wanted to teach, where or whom was inspiration from. GOD is a 'prayer answering GOD' perhaps handicap children?. |
