Slightly educated, inexperienced 20-something needs a career path/goal?

ive been waiting tables since high school and my body (and soul) cant take it! I have been to community college for art classes and went to trade school for audio engineering (i retained very little from that). Ive never worked outside the service industry.
Ive always desired a career doing something creative....writing, photography, music production, etc, etc. School is not my strong suit, nor do i enjoy it for the most part. I thought that eventually a strong passion for someting would drive me to school or to pursue something dillegently, but it hasnt.
I dread living an 'average' life with just a 'job'. I just dont feel that would fulfill me. I have no kids, no husband, few commitments. Im extremely open to travel and i love animals (no, i dont wanna be a vet!)

It wasn't until relatively recently in history that people expected to do work that they felt passionately about - most people just inherited trades passed down from generation to generation, and were just grateful that they had a way to make a living.

The plus side is that we now have many choices available to us. The downside is that if we aren't doing something that makes us jump out of bed with excitement every day, we think there must be something wrong with us. I worked my way through college and graduate school, and have a decent job providing real estate development loans, but it's not always exciting. I'm happy that I can support my family, though, and I think I may semi-retire someday teaching.

You can still pursue creative interests without that being your sole source of income. In fact, very few people get to make a living doing creative work. I have a friend with a Masters of Fine Arts who makes a living doing custom construction and carpentry - he'd prefer to live off selling his paintings, but he does what he can. I play classical and jazz guitar, but I've never expected that I'd make a living doing that.

Since you don't have a lot tying you down and you have some service experience, I suggest maybe you try looking for work on a cruise liner or at a nice resort abroad (maybe Caribbean or South Pacific?). You can get some fun out of it while you sort things out. Afterwards, pick something - anything - and go after it wholeheartedly. The passion may not come until after you've put some work into it.

I have a cousin who always knew he wanted to be a doctor since he was a kid, but I'm convinced that many of us don't find a passion until later on in life. Don't wait for that to happen first before you decide to jump into something, though - you may find something else along the way. Good luck.
