Help! First photography job - how do I go about it?

I have been asked by a client of the vineyard management business I work for to take some photos of his vineyard for an advertisement banner for his vineyard. I am over the moon about this, but I have no experience with photography jobs. I can take good photos, and know how to use my camera etc but I don't know about the business side of it. I'm not sure how much I should charge for the pictures, as I have no experience but I don't want to rip myself off either. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated, Thanks : )

I can't answer from a photograghers point of view but I can as some one that used to freelance.

First, congrats on your first gig. Second, Use tha nervousness you feel as a positive and prove you were right for the job.

Now, When going over a pricing I would do what some of the others suggested and talk to some other photograghers on what they charge. The thing is I wouldn't tell them why you are asking. Some may come in and try to get the gig while others may not help because of competition. Tell them what you need photos of and they'll usually give you a quote.

When you have a decent idea how much they charge you can figure out your fee. Make sure you include all supply costs. Once you have a figure if it's anywhere near what a pro charges drop it a good bit. You are not a pro, this is your first gig therefore you cannot charge pro fees. If you do he may as well go to the guy with the experience. But still make sure you can live with the price.

Also, I usually charge a third down that is non refundable. that way if you need something you'll have the money to get supplies. Not only that once you start doing leg work. (In your case check out the best locations to shoot.) you didn't waste your time and get nothing for it if he backs out.

GET IT IN WRITING!!! That's the biggest thing you need to do. Make sure everydetail of the related job is marked down and agreed on. That way if you do the work and he refuses to pay you have something to stand on. Just keep up your end. I've gotten screwed over on a deal before. I did the work, shipped it out, and was told it got submitted to late andcouldn't be used. I go on vacation 8 years later and guess who's image is all over the place for their advertising!? Watch you butt! One option is to peruse "Photographers Market" at a local library or bookstore. Another is to visit some online stock photography sites and check their prices. Is this to be film or digital? Are you supplying print or digital files? Do you retain copyright? There are many questions still to be asked. If you have no prior professional experience, how much is your time worth to you? Are you covering travel cost, equipment depreciation, tax implications? What if he doesn't like any of the photos? Sorry to ramble but the first items I actually listed may help.
I would for sure call some photographers and ask what they would charge for this type of job. There are some details you need to get savvy about----contract, deposit, copyright, presentation of an album of shots for them to choose from to name a few. Do you want to charge a flat fee or hourly? This is a commercial project, so you want every detail to be professional.
Good Luck what a first gig to score!!!!!!
