How do you take pictures like this?

I'm new to photography, and I'm curious how a photo is taken so it almost has this hand painted/illustrated quality? Very high contrast, color, and matt.

Here is an example from Wired magazine.

Looks like HDR or LucisArt.com filters.

Read the pupils, #1 has one main light to the side and probably a back light, #2 has two front lights, main and fill, probably a back light.

I tried to do a quick emulation by just using a faux HDR program on an existing picture I had for you

use photoshop or some other program to adjust the contrast. it think in photoshop you do this in the 'hue/saturation' tab.

This is a hard lighting technique utilizing some studio lighting and even more post-shooting digital effects.

Essentially, you need to set up studio lights on the subject from both sides, the front, and behind. This lights your subject in such a way where details can be brought out later.

After it's shot, the Photoshop process is essentially a series of steps involving duplicating the image, running high-passes and unsharp masks, adjusting the blending modes.

When you're done you end up with an image with hard lighting, and more prounced edges on what would normally be soft details.

This was probably taken in a studio and with lots and lots of post-processing.
