How do I start my own photography business? |
Are there any magazines I can send my work to? Starting a business - any business - involves more than just printing up some business cards. When you can answer these questions then you might be ready to seriously think about your own business. How experienced are you with photography? Have you taken any photography classes? What makes your photos unique? Have you worked for a professional photographer? Have you taken any business classes? Do you know how to protect your rights to your photos? Will you be setting up an "S" Corporation or an "LLC"? How much insurance would you carry to protect yourself if you photographed a wedding and all the images were lost and irretrievable when your computer crashed? Will you be working with a Contract or with just a handshake? Is your camera equipment insured against loss and/or damage? I want publicity photos of my band with the city skyline in the background at night. The band and the skyline must both be sharp and crisp with perfect exposure. I want your work straight from the camera with no editing. Can you do that? A client leaves $10,000.00 worth of jewelry with you to photograph for a catalog. Your studio is burglarized and the jewelry stolen. Do you have insurance to cover your client's property? You have a van with Billy Bob's Photography emblazoned on it. On your way to a shoot you are in an accident. Do you have the van insured under the company name? Get a camera. Start by taking pictures of relatives and friends, then get a website (you can get a good free one from freewebs) Advertise by sending out postcards and newsletters with your pictures and prices on them. |
