How Do I Go About Getting My Photographs Into a Magazine? Should I ask them first? Who do i Ask? |
I love taking pictures of photography, if i wanted to take pictures for a magazine, like during the summer, how would i do it? Just call and ask! You will probably need an agent to represent your work. You can also look in the magazine's credit list (usually a column near the back set in very tiny type) for the names and maybe email addresses of the varying editors for the magazine's departments. Correspond with them, remembering they are VERY busy people. They may ask to see samples of your work. If they show interest, they may choose to buy or hire you, but please don't be upset if this doesn't happen. Editors usually have someone on staff who reads their email and mail. Your work will have to really stand out to catch their attention. Also, photography is most often done "in house" by staff photographers, or hired from photographers they are very familiar with. But don't be discouraged, either. Instead of trying a nationally published, renowned news or fashion magazine, try sending your inquiry to a house magazine for a store which has human interest stories sent in by its readers. For example, Tractors Supply Company has an excellent magazine it publishes quarterly (I believe)... you could try like Country Living, or your local newspaper. You might not get paid much, but the object is to get published. Once you begin the cycle of being published, you can present a portfolio of clippings of your published photography, and that will make it easier for a larger magazine's editor to deal with you Good luck! |
