What is a good magazine or book to learn about photography and cameras? |
What is a good magazine or book to learn about photography and cameras? As far as magazines about photography are concerned, I recommend "Camera Arts", "American Photo", and "Black and White." Avoid magazines like "popular photography" or "outdoor photographer" because they are filled up with advertisements and offer terrible advice. As far as learning about cameras is concerned, I highly recommend going to a camera store and picking up the various brochures that explain what each camera does in great detail. Then, you can always rent cameras and try out different brands and formats to see what works well for you. As far as books are concerned start out with John Hedgcoe's "The photography book." This is a great resource for beginners. Also, no one makes art in a bubble, so look at work from others in the history of photography. Check out "The photo book" out on Phaidon press. Buy the small one as it is inexpensive and informative. Also, if you are interested in the philosophy of photography, try reading "Camera Lucida" by Roland Barthes, or "On photography" by Susan Sontag. To learn about cameras Popular Photography is mostly about new gear coming out. Most magazines discuss newer technology because companies don't make money off their 20 year old gear on the second hand market. For technique I recommend Outdoor Photography and Black and White Photography. Both are UK mags available at Barnes and Noble. For books I say go for the National Geographic field guide to photography. This has lots of advise from their staff photogs. 5 years of photography Nothing puts you on the right track like a good book - like the guy said: National Geographic guide to photography - that is a bit bigger than a brochure, but if you go in antique stores may find stacks of books on photography.
