Finished with school looking to do a little photography how do i start?

im only 17 and dome with high school i have no previous experience with photography except just fooling around i would like to start a career out of this but am not sure if it out be a good idea or where to start

You can absolutely have a career in photography.

But why are you done with school? Did you graduate?

Why not attend a local community college or continue on with your education? You can get much better photography training there than you could have possibly gotten in high school or on your own, and you can get some art and badly-needed business training, to boot. You don't have to go to school full time; even just taking a couple of classes at a time will move you forward.

If I'm looking to hire someone as an intern or as a full-time photographer, the kid who's working to better his skills in school is an easy choice over the one who's not.

Practice shooting photos. Go to school. You'll greatly improve your odds of being successful.

Go to all the local photographers in your community and ask if they would be willing to let you apprentice or intern with them. Offer to do it for nothing or next to nothing just for the experience and to see if it would be a good career for you. Whether or not you get one of them to hire/train you, ask them for any advice they are willing to share such as best colleges or schools for photography or other tips on getting started.

I would think that a wedding or portrait photographer might see the benefit in training you so that they could book multiple events and sending you out on weekends or evenings that they didn't want to work. If you have a portfolio of work you have done "just fooling around", and it is decent, they might give it a shot.

If you completely strike out there, then do some research to find out the best schools for photography in your area/region and tour their campus to see what they have to offer, to see if you might qualify for any scholarships or financial aid, and to get a better idea of what this course of study would entail. It is probably in with the school of communications (photojournalism) or fine art at most universities.

It would depend on whether you are wanting to take it in the direction of news photography for print or still or even videography, or art (portrait) photography. There are also some opportunities with wildlife photography, but I would think this would be an even harder field to break into.
