Am I completely insane to think about starting medical school @ 41? |
I have a MFA in photography. i am really into computer imaging and medicine. I specifically am interested in Interventional radiology. When I was younger I didnt have the confidence. Now I know I could do it. It is just I am afraid they wont let me in even with good MCATS because of my age. Absolutely not. It's never too late to start. I had three classmates who were your age, and two who were older than 60. I recommend that you read this excellent FAQ for non-traditional med students (non-trad = folks who didn't go straight from college directly into med school). Nooooooo, you're definately not crazy. Go for it! you will do just fine....Do not be scared...GO FOR IT..... No more insane than my GP was: she got accepted when she was 49. If you don't try, you'll never be a physician and you'll always wonder. If you DO try, and fail, you'll never be a physician, but at least you'll KNOW. If you DO try and succeed, you will be a physician AND you'll know. No. You should definitely do it. I'm about your age and I'm still working on my education ...I'm just about to finish my 2nd graduate degree. AND, I'm considering a PhD program! Why not? We'll be workin' until we're 80 anyway... might as well be doing something you're passionate about. :) I don' think that they can disallow you because of your age. There is a law that prevents age discrimination in education. 41 years, your very very young and who knows you might be the one to solve our medical problem(s). Good-luck!!!!!! I was 51 when I went to med school. Just to give you a heads up, you won't be discriminated against by a med school, but you will when you search for a student loan. TERI is notorious for denying anybody over the age of 35. It won't matter how good you credit is--you'll be required to get a co-signer. You will probably fare better by contacting KEY Bank and applying for their MedAchiever loan. Nice people there--and no, I don't work for them :-) |
