How do cameras capture images in black and white (resources please)?

I'm doing a report for school on photography and I'm doing how the camera itself captures it in black and white. I need resources too if you have them please.

Thanks!

A light sensitive emulsion is placed on a base (35mm, 120, 4x5, etc) the resulting product is called film

The film is exposed to light using a camera shutter and lens aperture to control the amount of light that strikes the film.

The silver halides that are exposed to light go through a chemical change and when developed buy special chemicals are converted to elemental silver directly proportional to the amount of light that struck the film during the exposure.

Or your can go to this link or google the question yourself.

In digital, a camera captures a picture in b&w by "dumbing down" the RGB that comes from the sensor.

It is always a mistake to have a digital camera capture the original image in b&w. Always capture the original image in color or RAW and then convert it to b&w in a image manipulator such as Elements or GIMP.
