Photographers, what are you making? |
I make good grades in school, but my real passion is art. I want to major in art in college, and possibly photography. This is a question for current photographers. How much are you making, what are your specific duties, and how long have you been at it? I've worked as a photojournalist for 10 years and made next to nothing. The pay was terrible and the consistency of decent assignments was sparse at best. Also, I find the lack of truth in photojournalism to be so apparent now that it is unbelieveable that anyone actually believes the newspaper as truth. I then chose to work with commercial photographers as an assistant( for another 3 years) and during that period I made decent money..20-30 dollars an hour doing on sight lighting, studio lighting set-ups, various errands, costume and design and making coffee, etc. That was O.K for a while, but I decided to get my BFA degree (Currently an MFA student) in fine art photography. Not only do I find this much more rewarding for me as an artist and a person, but it has paid pretty well with large art sales 2000-3000 for a large piece of art. Ultimately it isn't about the money, it is about doing what you love. I love photography and am genuinely obsessed with the potentials of the medium. This is also one reason I wish to teach photography at a university and make my artwork on the side. Good luck and I hope you follow your bliss! If you are independent, you can make as much as you want, as long as there are enough hours in the day and you are ambitious enough. If you are hired by someone, you may find information here... Do a zip code search at http://www.careerbuilders.com or http://www.monster.com or http://www.payscale.com All depends on the shoot. I specialize in glamour, fashion, band and portrait photography and prices can range from $100 for a couple hours of shooting to $500 for a day's worth. This is my private party rate (for individuals.) Prices for businesses are a bit higher as they'll usually pay a premium for services. Of course this is just for my style of photography and I also price myself lower than my competitors since I've not been doing it all that long (only a couple of years vs. 20+ years for some of the other photographers in my local market.) Good luck! Me! I am aFine Arts Major with a concentration in Photography at Shepherd University (www.shepherd.edu). While in school I doT freelance work such as weddings, events, and anything I could grasp. I get as much as 800.00 depending on what I am doing and that is without a degree or much training. Being an Art Major is very expensive. Depends on which way you want to go. You have to remember that with photography you have to be better than the next guy. Some events only need one photographer but others may need several. There is a lot to learn and I think that it would be a great major. Shepherd is great because it is a BFA and you learn other art like Printmaking, Graphic Design, Sculpture, etc. www.shepherd.edu, www.studentphoto.com |
