Is it normal to be so confused? |
Is it normal to still be completely clueless about what you want to do with your life careerwise when you're 22 and a junior in college? I'm taking the semester off right now, and I'm not really sure what to major in when I go back. I've thought about working with animals, but that pays horribly...which would be okay except my soon to be spouse doesn't want to go to school and therefore makes very little money and I am destined to be the breadwinner. Throughout the years I've thought about filmmaking, photography, creative writing, journalism, financial planning, human resources management, veterinary technology, lawyer, professor...is there any link? I'm at the point that I need to have a solid major and work towards a bachelor's. I hate not being in school right now, it feels like I'm getting nowhere. Help?! You are completely normal!!! I a didn't know what I wanted to major in (Anthropology) until I was in my second year of college. I ended up completing my degree in anthropolgy 3 years later, and didn't get a job in the field. I am now working on a master's degree in Coastal Zone Management online since I couldn't find a masters program in Environmental Science nearby. I plan on working in the field of Environmental Sciene someday, but for now I am working on the degree. I did Environmental Studies as my minor while I was doing the BA in Anthropology. You could consider doing a major and a minor if you think you can narrow your interests to two fields. My combination of a social science and a "hard science" worked out very well, since I had a start toward either path later on. I had a more diverse backround for my resume, and a wider range of potential jobs. You could also do a double major, but that takes more time. Good Luck, there will be tough spots, but don't give up. by now u shud b quite clear about wat u wanna pursue later in life. VERY NORMAL! There are so many kids who decide what they want to do at an early age and get a degree and go into their field and then decide on another one. Then there are those who get a degree in a field and never go into it and end up going into another field. On average you really won't know what you truly want to do until your about 30! So in the meantime just go to school take all your general ed's get them out of the way. Take classes that interest you and that apply to everyday life; things that you can apply to life. When you decide what you want to do then go for it! Things you will need to know in life would be medical, business, computer, basic math skills, basic art, communication etc... People change careers more often through life so what you decide on for right now doesn't need to be cast in stone so to speak. It would be good to train in a high demand career right now so you have income for sure but maybe down the road you can find something different. Life is like that -- nothing has to be for sure but you should be going toward a goal right now and then when you've completed that you'll have the satisfaction of completing and qualifying for satisfying work and receiving a good income as well. 1) Study something you love. 2) Realize that a BA/BS degree is a degree so it doesn't matter what your study as a major. (That's what graduate school is about) 3) Exploit your other talents and interest while in college that aren't part of your major. 4) Welcome to the life-long learner club! Enjoy it! 5)Uncertainly can be a guiding light. 6) Enjoy the ride! Peace. Former school counselor...and seeker myself... |
