Should I give up on my dream of becoming a photographer? |
I cannot decide where career I will like to pursue. I'm a junior in High school and I have pressure towards finding my goals. While,I have my peers telling me do something that will always be there,do something that you know you will win a lot of money. But,I want to do something I enjoy, something I know I can pursue for years. And that's basically all in the entertainment/art industry. For Instance, Photography has always been my main choice.Modeling is still there, but it has way too many requirements and it might not be something I can count on. When I tell my parents I would like to be a photographer, they tell me 'Well,do what you want but a photographer isn't all that great'. And then my mother is like 'do what you want, but why don't you try being a doctor. And,what if I do study photography and end no where or become a failure. What does it truly takes to be a success photographer that wins good money. Or perhaps,I should just give up and go for psychology.. =/ I'll tell you a secret. I've never in my life met a person who became a doctor or psychologist or amazing business man who did it simply because they felt like probably they should. Parents somethings think that college is like it was in the 1960s, where you sign up for the major like you sign up for the army and that's what you become. These majors, just like photography, require amazing amounts of drive and passion, and even with that, few make it. If photography is your passion, then that should be your goal. There will always be ways to make money in it, and the world will always in need of the best photographers.. but they are never in need of the worst doctors. When I was your age, I wanted to study music. And people would question me about a few generic sort of jobs in music and try to discourage me, but the truth was that they didn't know anything about the world of music, and neither did I. I just know that I wanted to find out. I kept my dreams open to simply discover the world of music, and then find my place in it, and over the years, that's just what I have done. -I've always made money, and now do perfectly well... but most important is that I'm good at what I do because I love it. I would not have been a good web page designer or engineer, and my pay would have always reflexed that. Don't let your dreams be confined to think that this can only equal that, and if you do this, you'll never get that. Focus on what direction you are pulled, and follow it fire. Millions of people work in photography, they all can't drive escorts. Should I have the BMW, the Mercedes, or the Jaguar? A lot of people are less fortunate than yourself, and work grueling hours in demanding working class jobs. You are lucky to even have these options in front of you. Remember that you are in a minority group of elite people who can pursue these career paths realistically, whilst the rest of the population are hard at work just to put food on the table. Be a doctor if you can, then you can help others. I think you should be a photographer, it would be great, you even might be able to do photography work for National Geographic! If you were a model you would be so scared about becoming fat and it might be terrible. Photography can be great but it all depends what is calling out to you in the heart. You really have to go with what YOU feel best about; your parents should be ashamed of themselves for berating your choices...Just ask yourself this; 'what field of work would I be glad to wake up for every morning, as opposed to something where I made lots of money and hated it?" that can at least get you started on an answer..Talk to photographers in your town or the nearest large city; see what they did to achieve their goals; their schooling, etc..the good and bad things about their profession....DO NOT give up and go for psychology, unless it's the next choice to photography!! do your homework; talk to these photographers and get some points from them..........do what you love, the money will follow!!! Never give up on your dreams or on something that YOU want! You go for it honey and I hope you make millions! I think you should never give up on what your dream is. I have a friend who wants to be a veterinarian, she just found out that there is only a 1 in 20,000 chance that she will be successful. She was going to give up, but I smacked her on the head and said, "You will ALWAYS regret it later." Which is true. When you're old and retired, do you want to look back on your life and know that you failed your dream? Life only goes around once. Make the best you can of it. Personal expreience |
