Nikon D80 w/ 18-200mm lens....? |
I am going to enroll in a photography class at the local college this fall for about one year. Can this camera carry me through school and into the future as I get quality opticals? I am interested in artform photography. Thank you for any advise. Let me just join in the chorus. The 18-200 VR was the second lens I bought. Fortunately, I got it before it hit the press and it was not so hard to find. Okay, it's not the world's PERFECT lens, but it is not too shabby. All zoom lenses are a compromise compared to single focal length lenses. Go here and read Rockwell's review: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.h... Here is the Nikonians Forum review: http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/nikkor-18... Go here and look at the sample images. Click on them to view them full screen. If you click at least once in the white space, your cursor will turn into a magnifier when you scroll it back over the image. Click again over the image and it will zoom to 100% size so you can really examine the image. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200/e... "Optically, this lens is the best superzoom we鈥檝e seen, though it鈥檚 not compatible with Nikon teleconverters, extension rings, or coupled macro bellows. It also costs about $300 more than third-party digital-only glass. But are extremely rugged construction, unusually well-controlled distortion, and four extra handholdable speeds worth the extra bucks? That, and more." http://www.popphoto.com/cameralenses/276... Here are some of my own photos taken with the 18-200 VR lens, showing the versatility of the lens. These were all taken with the D200 and 18-200 VR lens. Read any comments below the photos for more information. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei... Yes, the camera will definitely carry you through college and into the future. However, your desire for better lenses will cause you to get a disease called "lens lust," which is characterized by a strong desire to buy ever-increasingly expensive specialized lenses. Soon, you'll be wanting lenses with large apertures (f/2.8) and narrow zoom ranges or high quality prime lenses. This camera will do just fine, but start saving money to for the inevitable lens purchases! You have a great combination of Camera and Lens. The 18-200mm lens it THE lens every one wants. Even one of my instructors bought one and now uses it for nearly all his work. Now all you have to do is buy a bunch of memory cards. You may find that in school, you will first be taught photography using a 35mm camera to teach you how to compose, expose, develop and print your images. To do this find a nice cheap used Nikon N series camera. Yes absolutely and in fact when I did my research when considering the D80 I found that most D80s were in fact in professional use! That did come as a surprise to me. Since purchasing it I have taken some great shots and have had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. All the best with your course. It's a great combination. Recently, I toured China for two weeks with only my D70 (predecessor to the D80) and a Nikon 18-200mm VR as my only optic. Any regrets? Well, approximately 5,000 images later, I only wish I had more time to take more fantastic pictures. Equipment-wise, it was perfect. As for the future of your photography, prepare for the inevitable. There's always another lens in the store or on the horizon that 'would have been perfect' on your last assignment. All of us have lenses we wanted, instead of needed. You're welcome to join us! I hope this is helpful for you. Amateur & professional photographer for 45+ years.
