What will keep me motivated? |
I have 4 weeks left til summer break. I'm in the nursing program at a university...and I have 2 yrs left til graduation. The thing is, I don't like it and don't see myself doing nursing as a career for the rest of my life. But, I don't want to quit now becuz I've worked so hard and it would be a waste of time. I originally wanted to study photography with an emphasis of photo journalism...something that I will definately do after nursing school. I still want to finish nrsg school becuz it would be nice to have some sort of back up just in case. But my question is...how do I keep motivated to finish nrsg school. I just hate it! And feel really burnt out! But I know finishing will be good for me becuz a nrsg career consists of working 3 days a wk 12 hr shift...that means I'll have 4 days off to do what I really want to do (photography school) or even explore other careers. So I need to finish but how to keep motivated...i dunno...my motivation is slowly dying. OK, so you have worked hard. Why not switch to photography? 2 years can seem like an eternity when you are doing something you don't like or don't want to do. Find your joy. Maybe combine photography with nursing? Do a photo journalistic study of medicine or the schooling it takes. Did you know what you were getting into when you began? Maybe it is something you need to share with others. I can say from my own experience that no study is a waste of time. No one can ever take away what you know. Just because you started on this path does not mean that it dictates where you go from here. There are always forks in the road. It is all about choice. Choose what makes you happy. Choose what is fulfilling for you. Also, you must allow for your head to take a break from your studies. Go to a playground and swing or go to the gym or a book that is totally unrelated to nursing. Good luck to you. Whatever you decide, I know you'll be great! Love, Light and Peace. Remind yourself of how much you're paying for this education! Then picture what all you could buy with that money, but instead of shopping you flush it all down the toilet. That's what giving up at this point would be akin to! Find out if you have a newspaper at your college, and try to get involved with that, think about all the people you'd help if you became a nurse. That right there is worth at least 4 years of school, knowing at the end of the day that you've made a difference in some one's life. I know a nurse and she didn't like nursing school either and was so close to quitting but she didn't and she loves her job. Friends with a nurse. well once you are a nurse it will be much better. MY gram, mom and sis are all nurses they all hated nursing school!!! you got thru all the hard stuff. hang in there. you can take photography classes on the side. that is a hard field to get in, you need the backup!!! you can also do alot with nursing, you can teach, hospitals, clinics, schools, personal etc.... Don't think so much about the work you have to do now - but the rewards of having a nursing career later on. Just think of all the unique people you'll get to meet and help and even save! And it's ok if you try it and don't like it later on. There's always time for change later! If u really don't mind delaying your pleasure, endure being miserable in the nursing program with the hope that after graduating in two years u will finally start to begin to do what you really like. Remember that even then it will be only half the time as you will be working the other half. In the meantime I advice u to attend a part-time course on photo-graphy / journalism in your neighbourhood or on the web, practice on any occassion you get, write a journablog, post ur pictures, etc; so that you learn the tricks of ur future photo-carreer. When u are content with whatever u r doing, those you are doing it for, or to, are also happy and show their appreciation in various related ways. The practical move would be to discontinue the nursing program. |
