How do I start my own publishing company? I plan to self publish a book of my photography.? |
I need promotion for my project beyond what has been written in local newspapers about my studio and work.. eh well you wouldn't start your own publishing company to selfpublish a book. You would GO to a self publishing company and get them to publish your book for you. Do a search around the web....authorhouse.com is one I think. Don't want to discourage you, but you have to ask yourself what you want to achieve. Publishing a book or self-promotion? If you want to promote your photography business, do it online with a web portfolio and promote yourself on the web, perhaps marketing it virally through social networking sites. Get some nice cards printed to mail out, or even a brochure. If you want to actually publish a real book - perhaps a high quality coffee table book - and sell it, then start doing your sums! Where are you going to sell it? Ask the retailers how many copies they are likely to sell and what the likely retail price should be. Subtract their percentage (haggle - they and the distributors may ask for 50% or more) to estimate your revenue. Multiply the revenue per book by the (likely) number of copies you will sell. Now you have an idea of how much you can spend on publishing your book without losing money. Not much left, is there? So, go and shop around for printing and paper to see if it can be done. And you need distribution. And marketing. And production. With ingenuity, you can do some of this yourself, and haggle like crazy for the rest... It's a mad idea, and sometimes, possibly, a whole lot of fun! |
