Do you need a license to practice photography? Where do you get one and how? |
How do you obtain a license to practice photography if you have to have one? Is it only if you have your own studio? I hate to admit this, but I'm not 100% sure what the rules are. I know that for certain instances you have to have a Merchant's Liscense, which you would get at the county courthouse. If you're just planning on doing weddings or scenic photography, then no you wouldn't need that. What you will need is a Tax ID number if you're planning on charging for your work. And that also varies by state, because some states charge tax for only a few things, and some states tax the air you breathe (I live in Illinois, and I swear I pay taxes for EVERYTHING). I think in Illinois if I make more than $600 a year with my photography then I have to report it, I'm not sure if that's how it is in every state or just here. Your best bet would be to call your county clerk and ask them what you need. I hope that helps! The licence would be a business licence if you are running an actual business. If you are charging people for the photographs, then yes, you need a business licence. You will want to go to the county Clerk office for that. It's not brain surgery. Do like me: practice without any bloody licence. ----------------------------- http://georgiadis.googlepages.com/home... Other than the business licenses, and the tax thing, I've never heard of a photographers license. However I saw in the newspaper a week or so ago that some of the more popular sites for photography are starting to charge pros and asking them to make reservations for use of their venues, and fining those who don't. There's a few places along the California coast that do this. There is no license required to practice photography. If you plan on photography as a businessyou have to have a business license or a tax license depending on where you live. Any one with a camera can use it and make money but you want to make sure you're doing it legally or you could wind up like Al Capone... except for the disease and all the cash from the mob well maybe Al Capone was a bad example... you could wind up in jail for not paying the taxes and such. Good luck and happy shooting you need a business license and a tax payer ID from your state. Better safe then in jail!!! Check your local college for business courses. There are some schools with classes on starting your own business. Check out your local bookstore as well. I bought some helpful books when i started out. |
