What material (fabric) should I use to diffuse light for studio photography?

I want to make some screens to use in place of soft boxes, or umbrellas to diffuse light. I'm worried that using just any fabric will affect the white balance of the light.

Extremely thin, clean, white Muslin.
It's very important that it's clean & white, else the quality & colour light coming through will suffer.
thin, white rayon
They might be hard to find now, but in my home studio, I use 150 thread count flat white sheets. Before I began using them in the studio, I washed them with NO SOAP in the washer about 5 times. Doing this beats the heck out of them, which allows the same type of screened light in, however....This also means that your light will not be distorted.
